Pat Cummins hit three boundaries in one over, dismissing Rashid Khan, Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib for just 33 runs each in Australia’s second hat-trick of this tournament.

Afghanistan was powered by their fierceness to earn their first win against Australia after six attempts, yet much work remains before they can compete consistently at the highest level.

Afghanistan 202 all out

Afghan bowlers produced an inspired performance to derail Australia’s run chase. Guldabin Naib led this charge, taking four wickets in four overs to stop Australia from scoring runs and Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mohammad Nabi both contributing late wickets that gave Afghan an advantage in this chase.

Active paceman Naveen-ul-Haq kept Australia in check early during their run chase, bowling Travis Head cleanly before using a clever slower ball to deny Mitchell Marsh. Glenn Maxwell threatened to break open the game with his splendid 41 ball knock of 59 before finally succumbing to Naib who caught him off backward point.

Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi identified the dropped catch that led to Maxwell’s dismissal as the turning point in this match, and Afghanistan’s bowling attack kept them in control thereafter. Afghanistan won their first victory against Australia since 2006 after six attempts, keeping alive their hopes of making it through to the semi-finals; though in order to do this they must beat Bangladesh and hope India loses in Group 1.

Australia captain Steve Smith batted continuously and unbeaten for an innings-best unbeaten score of 89 off just 117 balls to keep Australia on course, while Marnus Labuschagne and then Maxwell provided vital anchoring partnerships. Unfortunately, errors in field play allowed their opponents to gain ground. Pat Cummins proved particularly effective for Australia with his variations and accurate line and length creating problems throughout. His final two wickets included Ashton Agar stumped by him before Adam Zampa holed out to deep midwicket before Australia were all out for 191.2 overs and were all out in 19.2 overs.

Australia 203 for 4

Australia ended the first innings on 203 for four, in a strong position to win. Unfortunately, their bowlers did not play to their potential; especially their fast bowlers were unable to take advantage of Trent Bridge’s good bounce and take full advantage of what it offered.

World champions Australia were in complete control throughout their innings against England. Travis Head’s brilliant 154 from just 148 balls made history for Australia as it set an all-time ODI scoring record in England – sharing an unbroken 148-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne to secure victory in their opening one-day international of five scheduled to follow later.

England will hope that its slow start to summer 2026-27 is not a cause for alarm; starting off with five Test matches in India this December and January followed by limited-overs series against Pakistan and Bangladesh, they must quickly adapt.

In September, both teams will conclude their tour. The women’s side will travel to New Zealand for three T20 Internationals and three One Day Internationals while Andrew McDonald will lead both men’s teams through South Africa for three T20Is and five ODIs in September. He has built an outstanding coaching team, methodology, and environment for their performances to thrive – we look forward to continuing our partnership with him for two more years and are confident he will help deliver consistent performances across all formats – his vision for men’s cricket program has inspired us!

Steve Smith 89 not out

Smith scored an unbeaten 89 not out from 77 balls to help Australia reach 277-6 at Allan Border Field in Canberra. It was his highest score since 2015 and included three sixes and a straight drive – it marked his fifth century overall and marked an important return after serving 12-month bans following ball tampering scandal involvement. His contribution in the match was critical given that David Warner and him both were back playing limited-overs cricket after serving these bans.

Both players were members of Australia’s World Cup-winning squad in 2023 and were named to compete at England and Wales’ next tournament, both expected to showcase a fierce rivalry at this tournament.

Smith not only boasts outstanding batting abilities, but is an outstanding slip fielder able to take spectacular catches along the boundary line. Additionally, his ground fielding includes quick run-outs and athletic outfield saves that show his excellence.

Smith has demonstrated his resilience despite controversy by being selected in Australia’s team for the second Test against England, coming in at 2/65 before lunch on day four and batted right through to end play; scoring an unconquered century on his way. With his performance denying England their first win since 2011, this century may prove pivotal in denying them their desired result of a Test victory here.

Smith returned to Australia’s squad following his absence from India’s 2021 ODI series due to a hamstring injury for the 2014 Zimbabwe Tri-Series and scored an innings century in his return. Later, he led them through two matches in this tri-series with great success before leading them towards series victory.

Pat Cummins 4/35

Pat Cummins stood out for Australia in their high-stakes World Cup semifinal match against Afghanistan. As Mitchell Starc‘s replacement, Cummins found something on an otherwise lifeless surface which few others could. His ability to bend the ball proved particularly effective and was on full display throughout this game.

Cummins is one of those rare cricketers who has an amazing knack of turning even flat pitches into battlegrounds, and that was certainly evident here as he sent shockwaves through Afghanistan’s batsmen with his outstanding pace and swing bowling. Cummins was Australia’s most prolific bowler and his four wickets proved crucial in their ultimate win.

Youngster Jack Frost delivered a brilliant performance to make an impressionful statement and secure his position for the remainder of this tournament. Comprised of Cummins, Starc and Adam Zampa – Australia boasts an imposing bowling attack.

Australian fielders ultimately failed to perform effectively during this encounter, going for five catches during their chase that put them in jeopardy of falling short of reaching their target.

The match was an exciting encounter, with its outcome surprising many observers. Afghanistan showed impressive strength of character to compete at such an elite level of international cricket competition.

Australian batsmen had difficulty with the ball but were kept alive by Glenn Maxwell’s brilliant innings, keeping their hopes of victory alive until an amazing catch by Noor Ahmad ended Maxwell’s dream of scoring an unbeaten double hundred with 41 balls left for play – ultimately being dismissed after scoring only 59 runs off 41 deliveries.

Glenn Maxwell 59 not out

Glenn Maxwell produced an unbeaten double century to give Australia hope in their previous meeting against Afghanistan; however, Afghanistan took advantage of an inauspicious start by attacking late with Ibrahim Zadran and Rashid Khan helping them reach 291-5.

While Australia struggled early and found themselves reduced to 106-6 in the 15th over, veteran Maxwell came back into play once more as they kept chasing runs with four fours and sixes from him. Maxwell kept their run-chase alive thanks to his dashing form; hitting some fours and sixes during that run-chase.

Noor Ahmad took an impressive catch to end Maxwell’s innings after only 41 deliveries; that left Australia needing only 43 off 32 balls in order to complete its extraordinary comeback.

Adam Zampa’s slow ball deceives Maxwell into attempting a slog across the line, only for it to be caught at long-on and hand Afghanistan victory in an astonishing finish.

Australia’s batting was in trouble after Hazratullah Zazai’s wicket in the seventh over, but Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran’s superb 118-run partnership provided them with much-needed respite.

Australia was not to prevail as left-arm fingerspinner Adam Zampa delivered devastating left-arm fingerspinning that ripped through their top order batting line-up, dismissing Gurbaz to Marcus Stoinis who then picked off Azmatullah Omarzai and Ibrahim Zadran with ease.
