Mark Robins’ side were outclassed in the opening half, as their lack of urgency showed through as passes went astray and they struggled to break through Manchester United’s defense. But Robins made an impactful statement at halftime with a tactical tweak which drastically changed the game.
Coventry switched their formation from 5-2-3 to 4-2-3-1, which allowed them to press higher up the pitch, forcing United into more mistakes and levelling the match through Bruno Fernandes’ deflected shot to draw level and give hope back into Coventry’s match.
But their midfield options were drastically limited after making several substitutions, placing strain on their backline and forcing a dramatic final 15 minutes with both teams pushing hard for an equaliser – but the game ended stalemate and had to be resolved on penalties.
