Afghanistan vs South Africa Match Scorecard
Though South Africa won their opening ODI against Afghanistan, they were thoroughly outshone in all departments by their Asian opponents. Now 2-1 to Afghanistan in this three-ODI series, Afghanistan are sure to put more misery inflicted upon South Africa at their third and final ODI matchup.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Afghanistan made an excellent start as Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored a magnificent century while Riaz Hassan and Azmatullah Omarzai contributed fifty-plus scores each. Unfortunately, Afghanistan’s middle order quickly collapsed, leaving only Rahmat Shah and AM Ghazanfar as reliable batsmen to offer any resistance in this innings.
Rashid Khan and Nangeyalia Kharote’s spinners did the rest of the damage as Rashid Khan took five wickets each to leave South Africa reeling. No South African batsman looked capable of stopping Rashid or Nangeyalia as they kept them at bay most of the time.
South Africa were reduced to 29/5 in the 15th over, before their innings was decimated. Wiaan Mulder and Kyle Verreynne managed some runs before Andile Phehlukwayo and Bjorn Fortuin took three quick wickets en route to bundling out for 106 runs in total.
Kharote then bowled an arm ball around the leg stump line which Lungi Ngidi tried to play as a slog sweep but missed and was caught at long off by Kharote! Ngidi became the last wicket as Proteas lost by 177 runs!
Afghani cricketers continue to build momentum on an international stage. Recently they have made strides forward, appearing in some of the biggest matches and emerging victorious twice against South Africa’s Proteas side. Hashmatullah Shahidi’s side are making rapid strides forward; reaching new levels in white-ball cricket while exhibiting immense confidence en route to glory – it will be fascinating to witness their performance against big-hitting sides such as Australia. Afghan cricket cannot be taken lightly!
Afghanistan vs South Africa 1st ODI
Afghan cricket team has recently experienced tremendous strides. Their victory against South Africa in one of three One Day Internationals marked one of their greatest victories ever and propelled them into one of the top 20 ODI teams worldwide despite an unforgiving cultural and political environment. This feat makes Afghan success all the more impressive when considered against this backdrop of instability.
Afghanistan Cricket Team has arrived in Sharjah, UAE to play three One Day Internationals against South African National Cricket Team from September 18th-20th and 21st. Afghan players are excited and looking forward to this match-up against full member country – they feel confident of taking down South Africa in all three ODIs and wining this series!
Afghanistan was accepted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) as an affiliate member in 2001 and achieved full ODI status by 2009. They participated in 2011 Cricket World Cup qualifying tournament and finished fifth, qualifying for both Intercontinental Cup tournaments as well. Since then, Afghanistan cricket team has become a source of immense pride to its people – giving them heroes they can cheer and an enjoyable sport they all can participate in together.
Afghanistan amassed 261 runs in 50 overs to bowl South Africa out for just 106 runs – their second highest total ever. Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib both scored unbeaten fifties to help secure victory, and together boosted run rate with a fourth wicket stand of 55 off 40 balls to increase run rate even more.
South Africa’s bowlers struggled against Afghanistan’s bat and were unable to contain its batting. Bjorn Fortuin, Kyle Verreynne, and Andile Phehlukwayo all conceded over 100 runs each; debutant legspinner Nqaba Peter was most costly by conceding 68 runs in 14 overs while also conceding three wickets in one over at the death which ended any hopes of comeback by South Africa.
Many critics have called on South Africa to withdraw from Afghanistan tour, citing how Taliban regime has violated international law while depriving Afghan citizens of basic rights such as education, freedom of expression and movement. By continuing playing against Taliban forces South Africa is turning a blind eye to gender apartheid as well as violating human rights legislation.
Afghanistan vs South Africa 2nd ODI
Afghanistan used both bat and ball to inflict more pain on South Africa in their three-match ODI series. South Africa were reduced to 177 for 9 after being set a target of 311, suffering their fifth biggest loss by runs ever in an ODI match.
Afghani won the toss and elected to bat first, compiling an impressive total of 311, thanks to Gurbaz Zadran’s 109-ball century and Rahmat Shah’s half century. They were well supported by Azmatullah Kharote and Nabi who each took two wickets each.
South Africa were quickly overwhelmed when spinners entered the attack for South Africa. Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi managed to neutralise Fazalhaq Farooqi and AM Ghazanfar’s initial threats, but once spinners entered play their chase began unraveling rapidly.
Spinners continued taking wickets at a regular rate to compound South Africa’s woes. Rashid nipped Hendricks leg before for trying to play for turn and was trapped leg before. Kyle Verreynne fell lbw when trying to sweep, while Wiaan Mulder and Nqaba Peter were bowled consecutively leaving them struggling at 111/5.
Rashid was honored to receive this accolade on his birthday, noting how grateful he felt to have such wonderful teammates, contributing to a win for his nation.
Afghan team players celebrated the victory by raising their arms in joy and singing their national anthem – an unheralded event given Afghanistan’s current political turmoil and lack of national pride. Afghanistan’s success demonstrates how even with limited budget and weak domestic structures, a small nation like Afghanistan can rise up and challenge cricket’s powerhouses; an example that should serve as motivation to other countries fighting for democracy, peace and freedom.
Afghanistan vs South Africa 3rd ODI
Afghanistan cricket team completed an unassailable 2-0 lead against South Africa in their three-match One Day International series by defeating them decisively in their second match, marking a stunning success against an inferior side ranked outside of the top five in terms of rankings. Rahmanullah Gurbaz made history when he scored an astounding century at home ODI while Azmatullah Omarzai and Rahmat Shah also contributed fifty plus scores apiece; new bowler Nangeyalia Kharote took four-wicket hauls to set them on course against South African Total 311.
South Africa struggled with their bat, with only Reeza Hendricks (59) and Aiden Markram (23) making substantial contributions from within their batting line-up. Afghanistan spinners proved formidable, taking full advantage of some sloppy fielding by Proteas players to control them easily; debutant Kharote, taking 4/26 himself during his very first over, picked off key wickets such as Temba Bavuma.
Afghanistan made swift work of their target in just 26 overs, thanks to an exceptional opening stand between Mohammad Nabi and Gulbadin Naib of 73 runs that set their target on track. But their middle order collapsed under spinner pressure with Nangeyalia Kharote taking two wickets as South Africa fell away to 136 all out.
Afghanistan have shown immense ambition and promise during this tournament, showing significant batting development as they have played more matches, with greater confidence with both bat and ball now apparent. Their win marks a massive boost for their cricket game at home; as this marks only their second appearance at a major international tournament since 2001! It marks an amazing achievement on all fronts – sports fans in Afghanistan especially will take great solace from seeing Afghanistan make it to a major final four event since then!
