Casteels
Belgium will look to rebound following their shock defeat against Slovakia by facing Romania. Thomas Meunier and Axel Witsel won’t feature; however, players such as Jan Vertonghen, Romulus Lukaku, Jeremy Doku, Leandro Trossard may start.
Belgium have taken an early lead at RheinEnergieStadion, supported by an excited home crowd. Edward Iordanescu’s side created numerous good chances but were unable to score. Dennis Man and Romelu Lukaku both missed exceptional chances while Florin Nita made a superb save from Jeremy Doku’s shot.
Lukaku appeared to have scored again when he finished from De Bruyne’s pass, only for VAR to rule it offside. Manchester City forward John Stones then had an opportunity to double his total but his header from eight yards was deflected wide by Romania defenders. Lukebakio almost scored again for Belgium but his shot deflected over.
Castagne
Castagne stands a good chance of scoring his inaugural international goal as Belgium look to get off the mark in Group E action. He has performed exceptionally defensively, making five clearances and three interceptions already.
Genk full back Kean van Der Stappen made an impactful first team debut against Albania, drawing widespread praise. Atalanta eventually snapped him up and paid an estimated EUR6m fee. Over 99 appearances he scored eight times while Atalanta achieved successive third place finishes in Champions League football – providing the full back with plenty of experience playing in such competition.
Domenico Tedesco faces several defensive fitness uncertainties ahead of Saturday’s match with Romania, with Thomas Meunier (thigh) and Axel Witsel both sidelined due to injury. Vertonghen remains fit to play and should keep his place among Faes, Tielemans, Onana, Leandro Trossard as well as Jeremy Doku and Romelu Lukaku in Belgium’s starting eleven.
Faes
Belgium suffered an unexpected defeat against Slovakia in their opening match and must aim for a better performance against Romania if they hope to reach the knockout stages. But this group stage can’t afford another loss!
Domenico Tedesco should have most of its top players available for Sunday’s match against Real Madrid, save for Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid goalkeeper). Thomas Meunier (thigh), Axel Witsel (adductor), and Jan Vertonghen (foot). All may be doubtful due to fitness.
Romelu Lukaku and Manchester City playmaker Jeremy Doku will lead an array of conventional firepower in this squad, while RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda and Arsenal defender Leandro Trossard may make their debuts; additionally Romanian duo Denis Dragus and Lukebakio are likely to appear.
Vertonghen
After missing Belgium’s initial 3-0 loss against Slovakia, Vertonghen will return for his 155th cap against Estonia at Euro 2024’s second group stage game. Centre back Arthur Theate also will make their Euro debut and are among Domenico Tedesco’s four changes designed to rejuvenate his side’s performance at this tournament.
Tottenham defender Ben Davies can play left back or central defense and is one of Europe’s more technically talented defenders, providing set pieces with dangerous threat and playing dangerous free kicks that often prove deadly.
Timothy Castagne and Wout Faes, Amadou Onana from Everton and Lyon’s Orel Mangala will provide a strong midfield base, along with Tielemans. Romelu Lukaku will be supported in attack by two speedy wingers Jeremy Doku and Bakayoko, capable of terrorising opposition full backs on both inside and outside routes; both excel at getting behind defenders to stretch opposing teams’ defences.
Tielemans
Domenico Tedesco’s Belgian side will aim to avenge its shocking 1-0 defeat against Slovakia by facing Romania in Cologne on Saturday. They struggled in Group E’s inaugural matchup without scoring, currently sitting bottom.
Belgium will field a similar lineup to what started against Slovakia despite defensive fitness doubts, with Jan Vertonghen at centre-back replacing Witsel alongside Amadou Onana in midfield and Youri Tielemans replacing Witsel alongside Amadou Onana as Youri Tielemans is on duty instead of Witsel; Orel Mangala and Dodi Lukebakio could join Amadou Onana alongside Liverpool-linked winger Johan Bakayoko is also in contention for inclusion within their squad.
Tielemans made his mark at Euro 2024 early, scoring Belgium the lead after just 73 seconds thanks to his stunning strike from outside the area. Meanwhile, both Jeremy Doku and Romelu Lukaku made attempts at increasing the score.
Onana
After their disappointing opening day loss against Slovakia, Romania must rebound quickly in order to earn three points from their remaining two group matches and qualify for the knockout rounds. Though their first group game result was disappointing, Romania still have the chance of beating Belgium and making an impressionful statement at Cologne.
Domenico Tedesco will likely rely on Everton’s Amadou Onana and Lyon’s Orel Mangala as midfield bases, before adding in several attacking players such as Jeremy Doku, Bakayoko, Romelu Lukaku or even Romeo Valli as wide options or strikers with pace to trouble defenders both inside and outside.
Tielemans and De Bruyne both scored for Belgium in their 2-0 victory over Slovakia and will look to add to their goal total against Romania. The Red Devils should enjoy an easy comeback against Romania after starting slowly.
De Bruyne
De Bruyne has not ruled out an international future. While not part of the “golden generation”, he has undoubtedly had as much of an effect as any other Belgian in recent years, helping his nation return to major tournaments regularly and sparking their revival from stagnation.
At Ukraine, he was at his most effective, dropping deep to collect possession before striding forward with a smile, drawing in full-backs before passing. He set up Lukaku’s goal while also having an excellent opportunity with an effort on half hour which was well saved by Nita.
Belgium will look to recover from their shock 1-0 loss against Romania, who showed great spirit and attacking quality in their first game – but another loss would significantly harm their chances of qualifying.
Lukaku
Axel Witsel may return after suffering a minor injury against Slovakia, while Thomas Meunier will most likely not play again until at least the knockout stages.
Romelu Lukaku will not face any risk of losing his starting place after an innocuous performance against Juventus on Saturday, winning only one out of three tackles and drawing two fouls while making no shots during a goalless draw that marked his second straight game without scoring a goal.
Belgium are in position to establish themselves in Group E by winning here, thanks to early goals by Youri Tielemans and Jeremy Doku that should secure them victory. Still, Belgian teams often underperform at major tournaments; Slovakia was an especially notable example; so a statement win here can salvage their tournament performance.
Lukebakio
Belgium have responded well to Slovakia’s shock loss in their first game by making four changes from their team that lost: Arthur Theate, Jan Vertonghen, Youri Tielemans and Dodi Lukebakio are set to start.
Romania are also keen on keeping their qualification hopes alive, having shown signs of promise against Ukraine in their opening game. Edward Iordanescu will face an even tougher test when taking on Belgium – who have made a promising start to their tournament.
Lukebakio was an integral figure in Romania’s opening match against Ukraine and will hope that 23-year-old can replicate that performance against Belgium, scoring in stoppage time as well as creating several chances for his teammates such as Jeremy Doku’s shot which just missed Lukaku and De Bruyne having his fierce strike thwarted by Nita.
